Glass Fence Maintenance – Cleaning Tips & Tricks

Glass fencing is an extremely popular fencing solution across South-East Queensland, largely due to its frequent use in pool fencing. It has numerous benefits with a key one being the ability to keep an eye on what’s going on behind the fence at all times which is crucial to creating the safest environment possible. While this is a great aspect of glass fencing, it also means regular cleaning is recommended as glass can quickly attract dust and dirt. With this in mind, let’s take a look at how to best go about carrying out glass fence maintenance.

Cleaning Your Glass Fence

Cleaning your glass fence is quite easy and can be carried out quickly with the right tools. We recommend giving the fence a quick hose to get things started. For those who are conscious of water usage, a bucket filled with cold water will do the trick. After the housing, get a bucket filled with warm water, a little dishwashing detergent and a large sponge and go to town. You don’t need an abrasive scrubber when cleaning glass, especially if it is coated in any way.

In order to avoid spots forming as the fence dries, it is recommended to get a glass squeegee. While some may baulk at this purchase, you will be surprised how much of a difference it makes when cleaning glass fencing. You can also use scrap pieces of newspapers but it will require a lot more elbow grease compared with the squeegee. You could also leave the fence to air dry by adding a small amount of rinse-aid to your cleaning solution, however results may vary.

On occasion you may notice blotches on your glass fencing that can not be removed with normal cleaning methods. These are typically the result of calcium and mineral deposits and can be rather stubborn. In these cases you may need to deploy a more serious cleaning solution that is designed to remove these deposits such as CLR. Always read directions before using any cleaning solution to make sure it’s appropriate for use.

Cleaning The Posts & Rails Of Your Glass Fence

You can clean the posts and railings of your glass fence with the same warm, soapy solution and sponge you used to take care of the glass panels. If the fence has a railing running over the panel, we recommend cleaning it first to avoid the soapy water running down your freshly cleaned panels. You should not need to dry the railings but we do recommend giving them a rinse once you have finished in order to remove any leftover residue from the detergent.

What To Avoid When Carrying Out Glass Fence Maintenance

In general you want to avoid any kind of abrasive materials when cleaning both the glass panels and the railings. Both glass and aluminium can be scratched without much effort so we recommend warm water and soft sponges for the most part. If you do find a particularly stubborn spot we recommend using scrunched up newspaper to remove it. While it may take a little extra time, adhering to these tips will give your fence extended longevity.

How Often Should You Clean Your Glass Fence?

Obviously there are a variety of factors that contribute to this, but we recommend cleaning your glass fencing once a month. Our service area is coastal which means salt deposits are a thing which is the reason for the timeframe given. If you are inland, you could extend this a couple of months provided you don’t get a lot of dusk kicking about. If you do notice your fence getting a little dirty we recommend getting onto it sooner rather than later, as the longer you leave it the more work will be required.
